Steps to Better Skating: Step 9 - Keep and Maintain Proper Equipment
by Marta Nilsen

Step 9: Keep and Maintain Proper Equipment

First, purchase boots that have enough support for the level of jumps that you are doing but aren't too stiff. Cost is a pretty good indicator of the strength level of the boot. For example, a beginner jumper does not need a $300.00 boot. A boot of that price would be too stiff and cause multiple foot and ankle problems. Weight does affect the level of boot that one needs. An adult beginner may need a stiffer boot simply because they weigh more than a teenager or youth. Many times advanced skaters that are petite need much less support than a heavier skater doing the same jumps. Likewise, it is not necessary to purchase an expensive blade until well into double jumps.

The boot soles should be waterproofed before the blades are mounted. It is important that a qualified person mount the blades. A poor mounting job can drastically reduce the life of the boot. After the blades are mounted, be sure to protect them by wearing your guards any time you are not on the ice. After skating, be sure to dry the blades and then put on soakers to protect them. You blades should be sharpened regularly - every three to four weeks if you skate multiple times per week. Check your blades at least once a month to make sure that the mounting is secure. Sometimes the screws become loose without you noticing, and this is hazardous to both you and others skating on the same ice.

Finally, keep your music tapes stored in a dry place where no other objects will damage the tape. Always carry a back-up copy to competitions. It is also a good idea to have extra tights and an alternate dress for emergency situations. Laces are also a must-have. When you break a lace at the last moment before a competition, there usually is not time to go out and purchase a new pair, so have a spare pair with you. Be prepared for the unexpected and have fun!
