Book Synopsis
September 2001
Review of Figure Skating For Dummies
- by Kristi Yamaguchi

This is a great introductory book for adults new to the sport, parents with children beginning to skate or older beginner skaters. It goes into significant details explaining the different disciplines in the sport of figure skating, men and women’s singles, pairs and ice dancing. It offers a concise section explaining how to choose the right boot and blade for your needs, and offers tips on how to dress for warmth and comfort. Next you will find out all you need to know about coaches and private lessons. She offers a great section on what to look for in a coach.

After the introductory chapters Yamaguchi plunges into the actual training of a figure skater. It’s not all on the ice, and she defines several ways of training off the ice as well as the value of nutrition for the athlete. Her approach to teaching the basic skills is adequate although I prefer the layout in John Misha Petkevich’s book a little better (see last month’s book review).

The diagrams showing the basic skating skills, spins, and jumps are very good. The section on spins is sufficient on the spins covered, but many are not discussed. Although all of the jumps are covered, you get only the necessities. The section on pairs will give you a good vision of what to expect if you plan to pursue free skating with a partner. The description of ice dancing does not exactly give you the feel of what ice dancing is all about. However, it does give you a great deal of information on many of the turns not covered in the basic skills section.

Yamaguchi offers a wonderful section on choosing music and developing a program. This section also discusses costuming, making for an interesting read.

There are several unique sections in this book that would be difficult to find anywhere else. There are chapters devoted to: competitions, judging, recognizing elements and jumps, ways to improve your skating, conditioning secrets, things every parent should know, and tips for watching competitive skating. Although technically this book doesn’t go into in-depth detail, it does offer a lot of unique information that everyone can appreciate and enjoy. Overall it is well worth your money and time.
