The OFFICIAL BOOK OF FIGURE SKATING is a great gift for any occasion. Published by the USFSA, this is my favorite all-encompassing skating book and we shall touch briefly on the many valuable chapters of this publication.

First, its history section is one of the most interesting and entertaining that I have read, as it captures well the spirit of figure skating throughout the years. In addition, the personality section expands on some of the greatest skaters’ lives and achievements during their careers. Some extraordinary moments are captured in the photographs.

The Official Book of Figure Skating also contains a very interesting work on the evolution of the skate and blade. The technical instruction chapter displays diagrams for each maneuver and is very descriptive with step-by-step instructions. Next is a small section on fitness for skaters, which introduces different types of exercises.

A very unique part of this publication is Skating Fashion, a favorite of mine. You will likely enjoy the photojournalistic story of “change.” The section on creating a routine gives the non-skater an inside view of all that goes into each program. The competition chapter provides info on the U.S. Nationals, sectionals, and regional breakdown. It also describes typical programs for mens, ladies, pairs, precision, and ice dancing. All parents and coaches should have access to the judging information in chapter nine. All the questions you were afraid to ask is answered here in The Official Book of Figure Skating .
