Skating? There are many reasons and opportunities to
participate
You might believe that ice skating is only for elite
athletes such as figure skaters or hockey players, but ice skating is for
everyone. Toddlers to elderly people enjoy skating year round.
Contrary to popular belief, skating does not require
strong ankles or any particular physical skill or ability. Rental skates are
better than ever and supply enough support even for large men! Even if you
dont like the rentals, affordable and decent skates are available at your
local sporting goods store. So, no excuses. Lets get to the many benefits
of skating. Family Time
Ice skating can be a great way for families to spend
quality time together. Many rinks offer family rates or special sessions
specifically for families. Birthday parties are a common occurrence. Packages
usually include a private room, a cake, drinks, and skating admission.
Its often very affordable and a great way to celebrate with family and
friends.
There are plenty of opportunities for the whole family to
take advantage of, so bring the whole crew and join the fun! Activity for Children
For children, ice skating group lessons provide social
interaction in a fun atmosphere. They can learn all of the basic skills while
playing games in small groups. Most ice rinks offer these group lessons
beginning every five to six weeks. As the children progress in the group
lessons, they receive badges as a reward for skills learned. This system
teaches goal setting, develops patience, as well as discipline in working to
achieve particular skills.
Students can then participate in local competitions at any
level from toddler to advanced. These competitions are great confidence
builders, for skaters of any age! Exercise
Another valuable benefit of skating is exercise. If you
have trouble keeping up with an exercise program, skating may be ideal for you.
Ice skating can be aerobic or anaerobic exercise depending on the intensity and
length of time you skate. Skating and ice dancing are both great forms of
exercise, increasing flexibility and endurance with very low impact. Practicing
the moves in the field helps build balance, power, extension, agility, and
allows you to concentrate on improving certain skills. Taking a group stroking
class can add a little variety to the training regiment. In Summary...
As you can see, ice skating offers many ways to
participate and provides many invaluable benefits. There are programs at your
local rink for all age and skill levels. If you ever have any questions, please

qualified PSA coaches are there for consultation. Good luck and we hope to see
you out on the ice! |
